Since
1999, 34 people have been fatally injured in the
Greater Toronto Area as a result of street racing activities.
In addition, excessive speed continues to be the leading contributing
factor in fatal collisions.
The Eliminate Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere
(E.R.A.S.E.) Program is a result of the collaborative effort of
twelve police services, the Ministry of Transportation and the
Ministry of the Environment.
The goal of the E.R.A.S.E.
Program is:
"to change poor driver behaviour through
education and strategic enforcement."
Street
racing is an illegal and dangerous activity jeopardizing the lives
of innocent people. Andrea Pike, a 29 year-old mother of two was
tragically killed by a street racer on May 30, 2000.
Andrea’s killer received a lifetime driving
prohibition and was sentenced to two years less a day for criminal
negligence causing death – a sentence that pales in comparison
to the life sentence that Andrea, her family and her friends received.
